Dust - 10 Ways to Reduce Indoor Dust!

Dust buildup can’t be hidden and by taking preventive steps you can greatly reduce dust inside your home or office, while experiencing better indoor air.
  1. Purchase cleaning tools that capture dust vs. pushing the dust around.
  2. Always dust from top to bottom to allow dust to settle.
  3. Always vacuum after dusting to collect dust that has settled on the ground
  4. Make sure your vacuum has a clean and healthy brush roll to allow the vacuum to thoroughly agitate the floor carpet and bring the dust up from the carpet. Brush rolls should be cleaned monthly and replaced annually.
  5. Mop floors frequently as clean floors reduce indoor dust buildup tremendously. If not damp mopping a floor, make sure to use a good microfiber bad to capture the dust.
  6. Shake out entrance mats often.
  7. Have your furnace filters changed quarterly and during peak seasons monthly.
  8. Consider placing filters in your floor vents to capture dust.
  9. Run good quality air purifiers that capture the indoor dust. This helps tremendously.
  10. Vacuum or wash your curtains and blinds at minimum a few times each year.

Feather Dusters: Quality Pays, You Shouldn’t!

Dust is inevitable and owning a good feather duster can make cleaning much easier. Feather dusters come in all sizes and quality greatly differs. Choose a quality duster that captures dust rather than pushing it around. Cheap feather dusters tend to push the dust around and don’t do a good job. Look for quality like an ostrich feather duster as they tend to do the best job in capturing dust. On heavily dusty surfaces try to wipe the surface first with a good microfiber cloth and follow through with a quality duster. By dusting with a feather duster weekly you can greatly improve your indoor air quality and reduce the spring cleaning time.

Vacuuming Techniques to Increase Quality & Speed

Increased productivity and better quality can all be achieved with proper vacuum techniques. Always try to plug your vacuum in an outlet near the exit area of the room you are vacuuming. In a typical room that is 30 feet wide divide the room into two sides of 15 feet each. Starting in the middle of the room near the entrance start vacuuming the first half of the room in one passing motion from the middle to the side wall and back. Move from the entrance area across to the opposite side of the room completing one entire half. Once you reach the opposite wall from the entrance, begin vacuuming the other half of the room moving back toward the entrance. You’ll now be able to unplug the vacuum and not walk back over your vacuumed area. Make sure when wrapping the cord to do it properly starting on the inside wrapping the cord. This will also allow for a quick release to begin vacuuming the next area and not working with a tangled cord.

These techniques will increase productivity tremendously. Lastly consider a wider vacuum to cover more area in fewer strokes. Sanitaire, ProTeam, Hoover and Oreck all make great commercial wide area vacuums that are great for janitorial use & durability.
