Vacuuming Techniques to Increase Quality & Speed

Increased productivity and better quality can all be achieved with proper vacuum techniques. Always try to plug your vacuum in an outlet near the exit area of the room you are vacuuming. In a typical room that is 30 feet wide divide the room into two sides of 15 feet each. Starting in the middle of the room near the entrance start vacuuming the first half of the room in one passing motion from the middle to the side wall and back. Move from the entrance area across to the opposite side of the room completing one entire half. Once you reach the opposite wall from the entrance, begin vacuuming the other half of the room moving back toward the entrance. You’ll now be able to unplug the vacuum and not walk back over your vacuumed area. Make sure when wrapping the cord to do it properly starting on the inside wrapping the cord. This will also allow for a quick release to begin vacuuming the next area and not working with a tangled cord.

These techniques will increase productivity tremendously. Lastly consider a wider vacuum to cover more area in fewer strokes. Sanitaire, ProTeam, Hoover and Oreck all make great commercial wide area vacuums that are great for janitorial use & durability.

Proper way to Vacuum your Carpet and get the Best Results!

Vacuuming your carpet the proper way can make a big difference in the appearance of your carpet. Many factors come into play when vacuuming that can impact the appearance of how your carpet looks. The type of vacuum, height adjustment setting, age of the beater bar, belt condition and many other factors can make noticing a room has been vacuumed verse not. Carpet will maintain a longer life and healthier look when maintained often. Following some of the following recommendations will greatly assist in helping you vacuum your room properly.

  • Vacuum in different directions as often as possible will greatly assist in increasing the life of the carpet and effectiveness of the job. Vacuuming in different directions helps loosen the soils that are dug into your carpet. If you don't have time when vacuuming to go in various motions, make sure each time you vacuum to switch directions to increase the effectiveness.
  • Vacuum at a consistent moderate pace. Rushing the motion of vacuuming will not be as effective as a moderate motion of back and forth.
  • The pulling back motion is the most important factor when vacuuming, thus take your time when pulling back to increase the quality of vacuuming.
  • Empty your vacuum bag regularly to allow for ultimate suction power. The fuller the bag or cup in your machine with debris the less effective the vacuum is.
  • The beater bar needs to be cleaned regularly to get the best results when vacuuming. Each time you change your bag check your beater bar to assure hair is removed and bristles aren't worn. The beater bar is at the bottom of your machine and is used to loosen soils in the carpet. Replacing your beater bar annually will increase the effectiveness of your vacuum.
  • Check your belt that connects to your beater bar to allow it to rotate. Belts wear out often and when they snap can either mark your carpet damaging it or cause your beater bar to not rotate. A non-worn new belt will increase the effectiveness of your beater bar to allow for sharper looking patterns.
  • Check your height adjustment setting. Though some individuals like to set the height adjustment higher to make the machine easier to push, the quality of the job is impacted by a higher setting.

Following the above recommendations can greatly assist in having better results when vacuuming. The more often you vacuum will also assist in vacuuming up fine soils built into your carpet and reduce on the number of dust mites left in your carpet. Periodically using a good carpet rake will also assist in a healthier carpet. Carpet rakes are a low cost and give the carpet a fresher look while loosening built in soils. The proper way of vacuuming your carpet can assist in maintaining a healthier longing lasting carpet.

Get Peak Performance From your Vacuum!

Remember the day you first used your brand new vacuum and the performance was fantastic. Months latter you start to notice that those fresh vacuum patterns aren’t being left any longer.

Other than the obvious of making sure the vacuum bag is always empty and filters clean, here are 2 more ways to get that peak performance back! Replacing the vacuum beater bar/brush roll and the belt will help vacuums perform better. First try just replacing the vacuum belt as it typically will only cost a few dollars to purchase a new belt. Belts are typically made of rubber and with the heat of the motor tend to expand over time. A new belt is tight and helps the brush roll perform faster giving the carpet more action. Still looking for better performance check the brush roll brushes and they could be worn down. A new beater bar can be purchased typically for $20 depending on the manufacturer and will help your vacuum perform better.

Sweeper Vacuums & Stick Vacuums - A Must Own for Keeping Floors Clean

Every parent knows with active children how difficult it is to keep your floors clean on a regular basis. Children are in and out of the home with dirt being tracked in constantly. Pet owners also know the difficulty of keeping your floors debris free. It's not easy and that's why owning a sweeper or stick vacuum is a must.

Stick vacuums and sweepers are vacuums that assist both homeowners and business owners in keeping their floors clean. Traditionally these vacuums are best when cordless though a few do come with cords. The corded sweepers take away the advantage of convenience and thus are not recommended. The key features of sweepers and stick vacuums are:

  • Flexibility as many typically allow for fine debris and large debris to be picked up
  • Light weight, typically weighing 3-8 pounds
  • Rechargeable, typically many will have rechargeable batteries or are wall mounted
  • Battery life of 15 minutes or more allowing for quick pick ups or a room to be vacuumed efficiently

Stick vacuums are extremely convenient as you simply grab it and turn it on to pick up a spill or vacuum a small area quickly. The two most important features to consider are the length of use and strength of the sweeper. Having a sweeper that is run by a battery is convenient as you can purchase typically an extra battery to allow for back-up when one looses its charge. The power feature is also important as you want to be able to do a good job. A good sweeper will have a beater bar that will agitate carpet area's to allow for good pick up even on thicker carpets. There are plenty of low cost sweepers under $50 that do a great job on hard floors, though not that good on carpeted areas. The three best sweepers that I've tested are:
  1. Hoover BH50010 Linx Platinum Collection Cordless Stick Vacuum - One of the best stick cleaners on both hard surfaces and carpeted areas. Long lasting battery of 20 minutes and low cost extra batteries available. Almost as powerful as an upright vacuum and great for the elderly and those looking for a quick clean.

  2. Karcher Cordless Electric Sweeper - Another great choice as the battery life is 30-40 minutes and the power is amazing both on floors and carpets. This unit is also extremely quiet and the battery recharges in an hour.

  3. Oreck Sweep-N-Go PR8000 Sweeper - Low cost and will pick up fine particles, though does exceptionally well on large debris. Picks up coins, paperclips and other heavier objects in just one pass.

If you've never owned a stick vacuum or sweeper and appreciate a clean area you should strongly consider. The convenience factor of owning a good sweeper is well worth the investment.

Their vacuums carry a three year warranty with average commercial lifespan of 7 years.

Proteam looks to go above their competition and they are growing rapidly. New to the upright vacuum cleaner market, ProTeam has quickly become a leader in producing quality. The ProTeam Procare 15 and 15xp are two dual motor uprights made with outstanding quality. The Procare 1500 is a standard upright with a dual motor allowing for greater coverage and comes with a 35 foot cord. The ProCare 1500xp upright vacuum is similar though comes with attachments on board to provide what a canister vacuum can do without carrying two vacuums. Both the Proteam 1500 and 1500xp carry 3 year commercial warranties and 5 year residential use warranties.

Canister Vacuum Reviews - How to choose a good canister vacuum

A canister vacuum can truly come in very handy for just about anyone. The uses are endless for a these types of vacuums. You can vacuum furniture, vacuum your car, vacuum hardwood floors, crevice your baseboards for dust build up, vacuum blinds & curtains, vacuum high hard to reach areas and many other opportunities. A good one will assist in providing a great cleaning outcome with easy mobility compared to an upright vacuum. The word canister is extremely vague as some offer the same capabilities that an upright vacuum would, while other canister vacuums don't. There are canister vacuums that run as low as $70 to as high as $800. When looking to purchase a canister vacuum there are a few key features one should consider:
  1. Weight - Having a canister vacuum that is easy to transport up stairs and throughout the house is much easier when the weight is light.
  2. Bagged or Bagless - Bagged canister vacuums require the additional expensive of purchasing bags regularly though tend to be better for indoor air quality.
  3. Tools - Looking for the tools included and quality of the tools are important. Make sure the machine at minimum has a tool to vacuum upholstery, a tool to crevice in narrow spaces and corners, a good floor tool for hard surfaces and a brush of some sort to vacuum blinds.
  4. Wheels or Shoulder Strap - Having wheels is convenient to some as it can be nice to pull the vacuum. Wheels do add to the bulkiness and difficulty in maneuverability. Many canister vacuums offer shoulder straps and cushioned casing to wrap around the vacuum to prevent from wall and furniture damage when maneuvering.
  5. Brushroll or Beater Bar - Many canisters are used as a complement to an upright vacuum. Used to vacuum all those areas an upright can't get to. Though many canisters do not come with a brushroll or beater bar which is necessary for carpet vacuuming. Rugs need to be agitated with a beater bar to thoroughly vacuum.
  6. Cord Length - The longer the cord length the easier it tends to be to move around the house. Many commercial vacuums will have a longer cord and not more expensive than residential.

The above mentioned features are many of the important ones to consider when choosing a canister. Some popular good quality canister vacuums are Hoover Ch30000, Oreck BB900DGR, Sanitaire SC3683A, Hoover S3670 and Dirt Devil 082500.

For individual information on the above mentioned canisters click here! Good Luck.
